How This Commute Calculator Works

Most people only think about gas when calculating commute costs. In reality, fuel is often less than 30% of the true cost. This calculator accounts for six cost categories: direct fuel costs based on your vehicle's MPG and current gas prices, vehicle depreciation (using AAA's per-mile depreciation data by vehicle type), the opportunity cost of your time valued at your hourly wage, parking and toll expenses, maintenance costs that increase with mileage, and environmental costs measured in CO₂ emissions.

The Time Value Component

Your commute time has real economic value. If you earn $30/hour and spend 1 hour commuting each day, that's $7,800/year in time value alone (assuming 260 working days). This time could be spent earning, learning, exercising, or with family. The remote work savings section shows exactly how much different hybrid arrangements would save.

For a broader view of how commuting affects your wellbeing, check your overall stress levels with our Stress Load Index. Research shows that long commutes are one of the strongest predictors of life dissatisfaction. Pair this with the Mental Load Quantifier to understand your total cognitive burden.

Frequently Asked Questions

What depreciation rate does this use?
We use AAA's 2024 per-mile depreciation estimates: $0.24/mile for sedans, $0.28/mile for SUVs, $0.20/mile for hybrids, and $0.22/mile for EVs. These rates account for average mileage-based value loss.
Should I include commute time as a cost?
Yes. Economists consistently value commute time at the worker's wage rate. This time has a real opportunity cost — it could be spent working, with family, exercising, or pursuing other valuable activities.
How are CO₂ emissions calculated?
We use EPA average emissions factors: 8,887 grams of CO₂ per gallon of gasoline. This is multiplied by your annual fuel consumption based on distance and MPG.
